Timbering and strutting :
1) Box sheeting :-
3) Runner system :-
- Timbering and strutting is a method of giving the temporary support to the side of trench, when the depth of trench is large or when the sub soil is loose.
- Timbering is also called shoring.
- It consist of timber board and strut to give temporary support to the side of the trench.
- A method of giving the temporary support to the side of deep trench or when sub soil is loose or very soft is known as timbering.
- It consist of timber planks and strut to give temporary support to the side of trench. It helps to reduce width of foundation.
Following are the methods of timbering and strutting :-
- Box sheeting
- Stay bracing
- Runner system
- Vertical sheeting
- Sheet piling
1) Box sheeting :-
If depth of the excavation is up to 4.0 M and if soil is loose, the box sheeting method is commonly employed into the the practice.
Fig. 1 Box sheeting |
It is just like box, consisting of vertical sheet held in position by horizontal rows of Wales and made tightens by providing strut.
Sometimes, acertain distance is kept in between vertical sheeting.
2) Stay bracing :-
When the depth of excavation is up to 2m , then stay bracing method is adopted to support the sides excaveted in fairly firm soil.
It consist of a vertical sheet called polling board opposite to each other against two walls of the trench and these vertical sheets are held in position by strutting.

3) Runner system :-
Fig.3 Runner system |
When the soil is extremely loose and soft and require immediately support at the time of commencement of excavation, runner system is preferably adopted.
This system is similar to vertical sheeting or box sheeting, but in this system, runner are provided at a place of vertical sheeting.
Runner can easily be driven into ground by sharp iron shoe at the lower end of runner.
4) Vertical sheeting :-
Fig. 4 Vertical sheeting |
It is similar to the box sheeting, only difference is that, in this case, excavation is progressed in stages by providing an offset at the end of each stage.
This method is best suited for deep trenches in soft ground
5) sheet piling :-
This method is progressed under the following situation :-
- It the depth of excavation is more
- If sub soil water is there
- If width of trench is wide and large
- If soil loose and soft
In this method, sheet piles are driven in the ground mechanically.
